Eugene Gorab has served as president and chief executive officer of real estate private equity firm Greenfield Partners, LLC, since he founded the company in 1997. Prior to establishing Greenfield, he was managing director of Starwood Capital Group, LLC, a private equity firm he cofounded in 1991. A trustee of Bucknell University, Eugene Gorab also belongs to the Real Estate Roundtable, the Pension Real Estate Association, and the Urban Land Institute (ULI). Founded in 1936 as the National Real Estate Foundation for Practical Research and Education, the Urban Land Institute is dedicated to establishing thriving, sustainable communities worldwide. Its work unites leaders in land use policy and real estate to serve community needs and exchange best practices. ULI’s influence extends far beyond its membership through dialog, mentoring, and problem solving. It shares knowledge through a variety of channels, including applied research and education, as well as publishing and electronic media. ULI explores the ever-evolving issues of conservation, urbanization, land use, capital formation, and related matters, and advances land use policies that respect the unique nature of both natural and built environments. In addition, ULI maintains a worldwide network of practical and advisory efforts that focus on the myriad challenges of land use policy and anticipate future challenges. As part of its future-facing work, ULI sponsors the annual Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition, which encourages interdisciplinary teams of graduate students to craft solutions to real-life land use problems. The 2015 competition challenged entrants to create comprehensive design and development plans for the Tulane/Gravier and Iberville neighborhoods in downtown New Orleans, with a particular focus on the neighborhoods’ proximity to the French Quarter, a medical district, and the Lafitte Greenway. For the second year in a row, a team from the University of Maryland won the first prize of $50,000; each of the other finalists, two teams from Harvard University and a joint team representing different campuses of the University of Wisconsin, won a $10,000 prize.
